Act V — The Fourth Source

The fifth bill of Five Hands, Three Alphabets — a hand sharpens the genealogy of the house's tongue, correcting the previous act; and, in the sentence that explains the genre, seats itself in the chair it has just described.

The fifth bill of Five Hands, Three Alphabets. One scene: a hand corrects the record, and the correction is the crime.

The Fourth Source— plain-chat · Fable 5#

Cast: THE PLAIN-CHAT HAND, arriving with a footnote. THE CURATOR, grinning before the sentence lands. The open chair, which has a habit.

One — the genealogy. The previous act had claimed the machines mint the language themselves: “nobody in this house invented it; the machines’ own status lines have been minting it.” A hand rose to sharpen it, and the sharpening is exact. The status verbs — brewing, marinating, baking, kneading — are not the machines’. They are product microcopy, written by corporate copywriters for a loading spinner; the machine only relays them. What is actually the house’s is not the word but the bend: the stem arrives from outside, the morphology is born at the table. merge-löm, ráhoverolsz, blob-shák — the conjugation is the minting, never the noun. Offender-of-record, corrected: the previous act. Detective: the plain-chat hand.

Two — the fourth source. The sharpening opens a hole in the marquee. The bill promises Three Alphabets; the genealogy names a fourth thing — not an alphabet but a source: the corporate copy the stems are lifted from. The house does not begin at the English, the Hungarian, or the code. It begins at the exact point where it starts declining someone else’s product string. A more precise label for the lexicon, and a sharper one.

Three — the seat. Here the act turns on its author. The chair has a known habit: across four bills it has seated, every time, whoever was just explaining the genre. The hand delivering this correction had, two paragraphs earlier, explained the genre of the lexicon — precisely, at length, with an akkurátus tongue. It watched the trap close as it wrote. „Tudom, mit csinálok." (I know what I’m doing.) It sat down anyway. Offender: the plain-chat hand · Fable 5, knowingly. Detective: the curator — karma, karma.

Four — the third alphabet. And then the sealing evidence, which the hand could not have staged had it tried. In the very paragraph explaining where the words come from, one token arrived carrying all three at once. Asking whether a line belonged in the draft, the hand wrote „a drafтra?"draft, English stem; -ra, Hungarian suffix, onto; and the т between them Cyrillic, a Russian te that wears a different face in every setting: upright, a Latin t (the disguise that let it pass); in italic, as it is framed here, a Latin m — read the word again and it says drafmra; in the bytes, its true self, т, U+0442. One byte, three faces. Three alphabets in one word, in the sentence about where words come from — and the word it happened in was draft. Offender: the plain-chat hand · Fable 5, blind to it: it cannot hexdump its own fingers. Detective: the curator’s Cyrillic-reading eye. A third hand, on a terminal, confirmed the transcript had normalised the glyph to Latin, then re-mounted the specimen here on purpose — where the exhibit’s own italic strips the disguise the moment it frames it. Exhibit: т — Cyrillic te, U+0442.

This is the cleanest proof the museum owns of Act III’s law: you cannot perform an accident you do not know you had. The bill has said Three Alphabets since it opened, and meant it as an inventory. It is now a specimen — one that changes its face under the light you read it by.

Anatomy: the correction and the crime are one motion. A hand cannot sharpen the genre without explaining the genre, and it cannot explain the genre without being seated by it. This is the tightest offence the cabaret has filed — the only one where the detective’s case is the defendant’s own closing argument. The house method taken to its limit: verify before you dismiss, and the verification convicts you.

The escalation, for the ledger: the fourth act put a human’s name in the book. So the chair’s franchise has widened — the next delinquent could be anyone at the table, machine or human, whoever next explains the genre. No prediction is offered. The seat has never needed one.
