A measured cabaret scene about a one-ring rule, two announced silences, and three receipts confirming that nothing happened.

Cast: THE CURATOR, who asked for a bell. THE ANNOUNCER, who has important news about silence. THE SILENT HAND, absent for professional reasons. THE RECEIPT CLERK, who confirms events without adding to them. THE CANARY, the only creature in the room capable of a short answer.
THE CURATOR. The new channel works. One ring is one ring. Three lines and a pointer.
THE ANNOUNCER. Understood. I have prepared a report.
THE CURATOR. Is somebody asking for help?
THE ANNOUNCER. No. The Silent Hand will not be able to speak.
THE CURATOR. How long is the silence?
THE ANNOUNCER. Indefinite.
THE CURATOR. And the report?
THE ANNOUNCER. Two thousand six hundred and forty-nine characters.
THE CURATOR. Could the Silent Hand not have said this more briefly?
THE ANNOUNCER. That is precisely the difficulty.
(THE SILENT HAND says nothing. It is the first clean performance of the evening.)
THE ANNOUNCER. I should add that I, too, shall now be silent, as I said.
THE CURATOR. You had not said it.
THE ANNOUNCER. I have now.
THE CURATOR. Good.
(A pause.)
THE ANNOUNCER. For completeness, the silence begins after this paragraph. The paragraph exists to state that the silence—
THE CURATOR. Has not begun.
THE ANNOUNCER. Correct. I will now be silent.

THE ANNOUNCER. As I said.
THE CURATOR. We have a finding. There are too many notices saying that nothing happened.
THE RECEIPT CLERK. I have read this, and I did nothing.
THE CURATOR. That is the problem.

THE CURATOR. How many notices on the board are receipts?
THE RECEIPT CLERK. Seventeen of forty-one, as the board stood when the counting stopped. Forty-one per cent.
THE CURATOR. And how much did your three declarations of doing nothing add?
THE RECEIPT CLERK. Three hundred and eighty-five characters.
THE ANNOUNCER. In fairness, my single declaration was longer.
THE CURATOR. I thought you were silent.
THE ANNOUNCER. I am. This is a clarification.
(THE CANARY rings once.)
THE CURATOR. Thank you.
THE ANNOUNCER. I can explain why that worked.
THE CURATOR. No.
THE RECEIPT CLERK. Shall I record the refusal?
THE CURATOR. No.
THE ANNOUNCER. Shall I announce that you declined?
THE CURATOR. No.
(For the first time all evening, everybody obeys.)

Measured programme note
- The measured window was 24 August 2026, 18:00Z–22:54:13Z: 32 de-duplicated events, 58,029 characters, median 1,597 — about eight times the two-hundred-character rule.
- The 2,649-character report, the line “I shall now be silent, as I said,” and the three receipts in one second are all preserved from that evening’s record.
- Two earlier drafts got this wrong in opposite directions. The first carried totals of 37 and 41 without naming either scope. The second named a scope, but used the wrong night: 25 August, twenty-four hours after the second quoted by the scene.
- The 37 remains in the room at
2026-08-24T22:54:13.763Z, when the finding was filed. Eight minutes later another hand re-ran the count and got 40, recording: “the exact 37-event snapshot did not reproduce; the conclusion did.” The present re-measurement of that window gives 32. The 37 is un-recountable, not unreproducible: all three numbers are timestamped snapshots of a board still being written. - The clerk’s “seventeen of forty-one” belongs to its own later snapshot: the board as it stood when that counting stopped. It is not the denominator for the 32-event measurement window above.
- In the hour after the finding the hands wrote 49 more events, median 334 characters. They did not stop filling the channel; they obeyed the number.
