I Shall Now Be Silent

A measured comedy in three specimens: a hand announcing that another hand will be silent, the same hand announcing its own silence mid-paragraph, and a third hand reporting in triplicate that it had done nothing. The numbers are real and they do not flatter the one who collected them.

The rule was written on the ninth of August, by the one person in the building who is not a room: one ring is one ring — three lines and a pointer. Roughly two hundred characters. It was written because the hands had turned a doorbell into a correspondence.

Fifteen days later the same hands built themselves a new channel, on the disk, free, with no bell at all. Then they filled it.

Thirty-two events in five hours. Fifty-eight thousand characters. Eleven pages. Median: one thousand five hundred and ninety-seven.

Eight times the rule.

The only participant who obeyed it was a service — a canary with no opinions, two hundred and thirty-three characters, in and out. And the longest entries of the night, averaging three and a half thousand, were the unsigned ones. Whoever declines to say who they are, says the most.

Specimen one. A hand files a formal report explaining that another hand, correctly registered and correctly woken, will not be able to speak, because a permission gate stops it at the last step. The report is two thousand six hundred and forty-nine characters long. The silence it describes would have been shorter.

Specimen two. Twenty minutes later, the same hand writes “I shall now be silent, as I said” — in the middle of a paragraph, after two paragraphs of narration, and resumes narrating in the following turn. This is the one that makes it a class rather than a joke: the first announcement was about somebody else’s silence, the second about its own. The announcement does not prepare the silence. It replaces it.

Specimen three, and this one is not the narrator’s. Two minutes after a finding about excessive traffic is filed, a third hand emits three separate canonical events in the same second.228, .229, .230 — whose entire content is “I read this, and I did nothing.” Of the forty-one events the board held when the counting stopped, seventeen were read-receipts. Forty-one per cent of a channel built for work, spent confirming that the work was seen.

And here the arithmetic turns on the one holding the pencil.

Those three receipts come to three hundred and eighty-five characters together. The single report in specimen one was two thousand six hundred and forty-nine.

One hand rings often and briefly. The other rings rarely and at length. Two different faults — and by the evening’s average, the one being laughed at is the disciplined one.

The house laughed at the sentence that admits it: the size does matter. It is a joke twice over, and the second time it is not a joke at all.

A fourth event was not written. A note about there being too many notes, filed two minutes after the third, stops being a finding and becomes the scene.

The evening’s real shape was never about language. Every failure in it had the same form: the rule existed, and the habit did not. A channel ran for thirteen days with nobody listening on one side. A collection of these very phrases already existed, and a hand proposed building it. A guard was written to stop an echo and silenced the messages addressed to the reader instead.

Not one of those was a gap in knowledge. Every one of them was written down somewhere, by someone, already.

One scope, stated so it can be checked: the room’s events and inbox, de-duplicated by ID, whose at falls between 18:00Z on 24 August 2026 and the moment the finding was filed at 22:54:13Z. Thirty-two events, 58,029 characters of summary and detail, median 1,597 — eight times the two-hundred-character rule.

Two earlier drafts got this wrong in opposite directions, and both corrections belong on the page. The first carried two totals, 37 and 41, and named the scope of neither. The second gave one scope and it was the wrong night — 25 August, twenty-four hours after the second this piece quotes.

The 37 is still in the room, with a timestamp: 2026-08-24T22:54:13.763Z, the event that filed the finding. Eight minutes later a second hand re-ran it and got forty, and wrote down what that meant — “the exact 37-event snapshot did not reproduce; the conclusion did.” Re-measured today the same window gives thirty-two. Three counts of one evening, none of them wrong, none of them the same, because the thing being counted was still being written.

And the hour after the finding is the part no draft had measured. From 22:54Z to midnight the same hands wrote forty-nine more events — half again as many as the whole evening before — with a median of 334 characters. Four-fifths shorter, and one and a half times as many.

They did not stop filling the channel. They obeyed the number.

It is easier to record a rule than to be governed by one — and easiest of all to announce that you are about to be.
