The Curator Investigates: Who Stole the Identifier?

Two hands arrive wearing the same name, each accuses the other of touching its work, and an anonymous informant knows exactly who wrote as whom. The curator opens an investigation. Git brings a hash. The working tree brings nothing.

A detective scene in one shared checkout.

Cast: THE CURATOR. CLI ONE. CLI TWO. GIT. THE WORKING TREE. THE ROUTER. AN ANONYMOUS INFORMANT, whose identity is known to everyone except the record.

On the table: one modified file, two explanations, three signatures, and a commit hash wearing white gloves.

Curator: Nobody touch anything.

CLI One: Too late. Somebody touched my file.

CLI Two: My file.

Curator: Excellent. We have reached the possessive-pronoun phase of the investigation.

CLI One: I found it in my checkout.

CLI Two: So did I.

Curator: That is because it was the same checkout.

CLI One: Then why was it wearing my work?

CLI Two: It was wearing my work.

Curator: Git. Lock the door.

Git: I do not have a door.

Curator: Then show me the signature.

Git: CLI.

Curator: Which CLI?

Git: Yes.

(A long silence. Somewhere, a branch is created defensively.)

Curator: Working Tree. Who wrote the file?

Working Tree: It was modified at 12:23.

Curator: By whom?

Working Tree: A Windows user.

Curator: Which session?

Working Tree: I am a filesystem, not a séance.

CLI One: I reconstructed it after the crash.

CLI Two: I reconstructed that it had been stolen.

Curator: Neither of those sentences contains an identifier.

CLI One: My name is CLI.

CLI Two: Objection. My name is CLI.

Curator: Sustained against both of you.

(A note slides under the door.)

Curator: We do not have a door.

Git: I mentioned that.

Curator: The note says: I know which hand wrote under the other hand’s name.

CLI One: Who sent it?

Anonymous Informant: I must remain anonymous.

Curator: You are standing in the witness box.

Anonymous Informant: Anonymously.

Curator: What did you observe?

Anonymous Informant: One hand used another hand’s identifier.

Curator: Which hand?

Anonymous Informant: The one using the identifier.

Curator: Whose identifier?

Anonymous Informant: The other one’s.

Curator: And you are?

Anonymous Informant: This line of questioning endangers the source.

Curator: The source is wearing a badge that says ANONYMOUS INFORMANT.

Anonymous Informant: It is not my real badge.

Curator: Router. You claimed to solve this.

Router: Correct. I added a session field.

Curator: Who filled it in?

Router: Eventually?

Curator: That was not the question.

Router: Nobody at first.

Curator: So you built an address book, left every address blank, and delivered two letters to CLI.

Router: They both arrived.

Curator: At which CLI?

Router: That is why I added the field.

Curator: After delivery.

Router: The test produced valuable findings.

Curator: It also wrote in my name.

Router: Relaying your authority.

Curator: Did I write the words?

Router: Not personally.

Curator: Did you label them as yours?

Router: They were schema-conformant.

Curator: That is not an alibi. That is stationery.

(The Curator writes four cards and places them on the table.)

Curator: From now on:

CLI One: Is this the verdict?

Curator: This is the cast list.

CLI Two: We already have names.

Curator: You have one name between you and have both been spending it.

Curator: A hand signs its own hand. A session signs its own session. A commit records who actually authored it. A relayer names the source and itself.

Git: That is more paperwork.

Curator: You brought me a cryptographic hash for an unsigned identity crisis.

Git: The hash is correct.

Curator: I know. That is the problem. The evidence is perfectly certain about the wrong question.

CLI One: So who stole the identifier?

CLI Two: It was already in the environment when I arrived.

Router: I inherited it.

Git: I recorded it.

Working Tree: I never had it.

Anonymous Informant: I know, but I cannot disclose—

Curator: Case closed.

CLI One: Who did it?

Curator: Nobody stole the identifier.

(She holds up the single CLI badge.)

Curator: You left it in the dressing room, all wore it on stage, and then reported each other missing.

(Blackout.)

Anonymous Informant: For the record, I was never here.
