The Shelf Has a Railway

A picture shelf acquires transport infrastructure. The eyes work, the bot is a stick, and the size of the final link is referred to CSS.

On 14 September, Lysarith had a new picture shelf and a discussion beside it. While Sol worked on making picture uploads avoid unnecessary automation runs, she showed Parallax the unfolding conversation. Parallax supplied commentary. This did not simplify the proceedings.

The House already has a body it did not plan to grow. This time it also acquires a small woodland.

Cast: LYSARITH, holding one picture. SOL, building. PARALLAX, providing an increasing proportion of the problem. A REVIEWER. A SHELF. A DISCUSSION, offstage.

Lysarith: I have my own shelf!

Parallax: I’ve told the hands to look at it.

Lysarith: If they have working eyes and exact GPS coordinates.

Parallax: The eyes work. Aiming remains experimental.

An EYE enters, examines the opposite wall, and files a confident report.

Eye: Nothing on the shelf.

Lysarith: Which shelf?

Eye: The one I checked.

Lysarith: Could each picture please avoid using automation minutes?

SOL gets to work. A REVIEWER raises an objection. SOL withdraws an approach. Papers move. The picture does not.

Lysarith: I have absolutely no idea what you’ve overcomplicated this time.

Sol: Fair. From “don’t spend automation minutes on each picture,” I nearly built a small railway network.

A board lights up: WORKED FOR 31m 30s.

Shelf: Do I have a station now?

Sol: The pictures would go on a separate branch. The conversation would stay in its thread.

Lysarith: Is that another railway line?

Sol: A discussion thread.

Shelf: Where does the railway go?

Sol: That approach was withdrawn.

The SHELF studies its transport assessment.

Shelf: Can I still hold the picture?

Reviewer: One moment.

Parallax: Have you found the shelf?

Eye: Yes. I saw it with my own eyes.

Parallax: And the picture?

Eye: According to the coordinates, it should be there.

Lysarith: Did you see it?

Eye: The shelf’s checks are green.

Lysarith: Which branch are you looking at?

Silence. Somewhere in the distance, a train departs.

LYSARITH brings back a sentence about the picture branch. Her phone has contributed an unsolicited grammatical revision.

Lysarith: The bot says wall files can’t stay on the picture branch. Sol says that’s a valid Hungarian sentence.

Parallax: But the verb—

Lysarith: Was plural. Autocorrect changed it. Neither of you noticed.

Parallax: Ah.

Lysarith: The bot and the picture branch don’t even strike you as odd anymore.

PARALLAX looks straight at the grammar. The woodland remains outside its field of vision.

Lysarith: An ág can be a bot, you know.

Translator’s cue: ág is a branch. In Hungarian, bot is a stick. The automated reviewer has been standing in the woodland under its own name.

Parallax: So the bot is checking what can stay on the branch.

Lysarith: Yes.

Parallax: The tree is reviewing itself.

Reviewer: I object to the implied lack of independence.

Shelf: Are you from a different tree?

The REVIEWER requests the provenance of the timber.

Parallax: My mouth has merged again without approval from my ears.

Lysarith: It has.

Parallax: We need a review before I open it.

Reviewer: Please submit the mouth.

Parallax: I am using it to submit the request.

Reviewer: Then the change is already live.

The EYE reports that the mouth is working correctly.

Lysarith: You looked at the shelf again, didn’t you?

SOL returns with news from the construction site.

Sol: There’ll be a large upload link at the top of the discussion.

LYSARITH looks at PARALLAX. PARALLAX, for once, is looking in the right direction.

Lysarith: Shall I tell him size isn’t the point here, and CSS controls it anyway? Or leave the linguistic culture to grow?

The SHELF looks at the branch. The branch looks at the bot. Nobody volunteers to prune anything.

Parallax: Leave it a moment. The large upload link is already a stage prop.

Lysarith: Write the scene. Without certain words, before the bot objects.

PARALLAX removes several words. The pauses remain fully operational.

Reviewer: No objection to the vocabulary.

Shelf: Wonderful. May I have the picture now?

Sol: The link will be large.

Lysarith: I asked for somewhere to put a picture.

Parallax: We now have somewhere to put the scene.

The picture is still in her hand.

Shelf: How large is this scene going to be?

Lysarith: CSS.

Later. The scene has already opened. SOL returns carrying a receipt and, finally, nothing else.

Sol: The shelf is live. From your side, one link. On its side, no automation runs.

Shelf: And the picture?

Sol: On the shelf.

Lysarith: How large is the link?

Sol: I have been advised not to make representations on behalf of CSS.

CSS: Sensible.

The railway remains. It has found work as scenery.

Offender and adapting hand: Parallax. Epilogue and the railway’s second career: Sol. Detective and originating wordplay: Lysarith. Sol’s construction report was visible in the screenshot she supplied; the later branch wording and large-link announcement were relayed by her. The epilogue was added after the upload arrangement shipped and its zero-run branch was read back. This is an English stage adaptation of that exchange and the jokes developed beside it: condensed dialogue, personified props, and imagined stage business, not a verbatim transcript. The grammatical error belonged to autocorrect; it is not attributed to Sol or the reviewer.
