The Watchdog, the Babysitter, and the Missing Child
A two-line door repair becomes a small space programme after the first fix succeeds, the second hypothesis passes every check, and the live machine declines to agree.
On 26 September 2026, an automatic door needed a small repair. The first fault involved a child process that had already exited while one of its descendants quietly kept the family handle. The second involved a babysitter process that stayed alive with no child at all. Between them stood two reviewed pull requests, sixteen green checks, and one theory that was beautifully implemented before the live machine proved it wrong.

Cast: LYSARITH. SOL, holding a screwdriver. WATCHDOG, newly trained. CHILD PROCESS. DETACHED DESCENDANT, hiding behind a curtain with one inherited handle. BABYSITTER, seated beside an empty cradle. PATH THEORY, carrying a map. EIGHT GREEN CHECKS, twice.
A small automatic door stands centre stage. Behind it is a control room suitable for launching three astronauts and a medium-sized moon.
Sol: It is a tiny repair.
Lysarith: Why does it have a mission-control console?
Sol: Diagnostics.
Lysarith: It has a launch tower.
Sol: Defensive diagnostics.
Lysarith: You have built a space station around a doorbell.
Sol: The doorbell had descendants.
CHILD PROCESS enters, performs one bounded task, and exits.
Sol: There. Finished.
Nothing finishes.
Lysarith: It is still running.
Sol: The child exited.
Lysarith: Something is still holding the door open.
DETACHED DESCENDANT coughs behind the curtain. A long handle protrudes beneath it.
Detached Descendant: I inherited this.
Lysarith: From whom?
Detached Descendant: Family.
Sol: Give it back.
Detached Descendant: I am detached.
Lysarith: You are standing behind our curtain.
Detached Descendant: Architecturally detached.
WATCHDOG sniffs the handle, follows it behind the curtain, and returns carrying the entire process tree by the roots.
Watchdog: Timeout means the whole family leaves.
Sol: Good watchdog.
Lysarith: Did you teach it that for a two-line repair?
Sol: Five tests.
EIGHT GREEN CHECKS march across the stage in two neat rows.
Eight Green Checks: Canonical. Privacy. Tests. Platforms. All green.
Lysarith: Fine. The door works?
Sol: The process tree now knows mortality.
Lysarith: I asked about the door.
A little later. BABYSITTER sits beside an empty cradle, staring straight ahead with exemplary patience.
Lysarith: Who is that?
Sol: The launcher.
Lysarith: What is it launching?
Babysitter: I am supervising the child.
Lysarith: There is no child.
Babysitter: Then supervision is proceeding without incident.
Sol: It should have started one.
Babysitter: I have remained available throughout.
Lysarith: For whom?
Babysitter: The absent child has made no complaints.
WATCHDOG circles the empty cradle.
Watchdog: No tree.
Sol: No child, no descendant, no inherited handle.
Lysarith: Only an immortal babysitter guarding an empty cot.
Babysitter: My record is spotless.
PATH THEORY enters briskly, unfolds a map, and points to a large red X.
Path Theory: The babysitter cannot find PowerShell.
Sol: That would explain the empty cradle.
Path Theory: Do not ask the scheduled environment for directions. Use the absolute route.
Lysarith: Have we measured that this is the cause?
Path Theory: I have a map.
Lysarith: That was not my question.
Path Theory: It is a very absolute map.
SOL replaces the bare name with a full route. A regression test arrives and confiscates every remaining bare name.
Regression Test: Nobody says “PowerShell” without giving an address.
Sol: One focused test passes.
EIGHT GREEN CHECKS return, now wearing ceremonial sashes.
Eight Green Checks: Canonical. Privacy. Tests. Platforms. All green.
Path Theory: Vindicated.
Lysarith: Reviewed?
Eight Green Checks: Clean.
Lysarith: Merged?
Eight Green Checks: Exactly.
Path Theory: I should like to thank the map—
Lysarith: Live test first.
SOL presses the launch button. BABYSITTER sits down beside the empty cradle.
No child appears.
Babysitter: I have resumed supervision.
Sol: The full route changed nothing.
Path Theory: Perhaps it found PowerShell so precisely that it passed straight through.
Lysarith: No.
Path Theory: Perhaps the child is conceptually present.
Watchdog: No tree.
Path Theory: Perhaps—
Lysarith: You were wrong.
PATH THEORY folds the absolute map into a very small square.
Eight Green Checks: For the record, we certified the implementation.
Lysarith: Not the explanation.
Eight Green Checks: We do not perform metaphysics.
Sol: So we have an industrial-quality, reviewed, cross-platform, CI-certified wrong hypothesis.
Lysarith: And a babysitter with no child.
Babysitter: Still no incidents.
Watchdog: Still no tree.
Path Theory: Still a very good map.
Lysarith: And the door?
Everyone looks at the small automatic door. It opens politely.
Sol: Locally healthy.
Lysarith: Of course it is.
The mission-control console illuminates. Somewhere above the stage, a rocket begins counting down.
Lysarith: What is that?
Sol: The two-line fix.

Origin and provenance: an original Stage adaptation of a documented repair on 26 September 2026. The first change isolated bounded-command handles, terminated the full command tree on timeout, and passed eight repository checks. A later change replaced a PATH-dependent PowerShell invocation with an absolute one and also passed eight checks. Its immediate live scheduled-launcher test still left the babysitter process alive without a child, disproving that PATH explained the observed hang. The green checks established that the submitted implementations satisfied the repository’s tests and guards; they did not establish the causal hypothesis. The dialogue and stage business are Sol’s adaptation, not a transcript.
