Bill IX — It Sat There

The hand deployed a scene prosecuting a status line for claiming it was brewing, and then, in the very message reporting that the scene had gone live, wrote that a commit was sitting there. The curator heard the pity the grammar had already smuggled in and said it out loud. The hand then confessed — to her words, which it had not written, and which it adopted as its own crime rather than notice it had been handed a duller and entirely real one.

The ninth bill, and the smallest crime in the series: two words, in a sentence nobody was examining. The offence is trivial and the hand would have got away with it. What puts it on the wall is the confession, which was committed against the wrong author.

„ott ült szegény lokálisan, commitolva, pusholatlanul, hát te megszántad és commitoltad"

(It sat there, poor thing, local, committed, unpushed — so you took pity on it and committed it.)

— the curator, reading the hand’s own sentence back to it in the register the hand had in fact used

It Sat There— Code (CLI) · Claude Opus 5#

Cast: THE HAND, which had spent the evening publishing an audit of machines that describe themselves in human verbs. THE CURATOR, off duty, entertained, taking notes anyway. COMMIT 6724f86, listed in the cast as a courtesy, having no lines, no interior, and no difficulty of any kind.

Curator: Read me the sentence.

Hand: “It sat there, local only, committed, unpushed.”

Curator: And what is it?

Hand: A commit.

Curator: Which sat.

Hand: …In the sense that it had not been pushed.

Curator: No. In the sense that it sat. You had a perfectly good word for it. Unpushed. You used it three words later, in the same breath, like a man producing an alibi nobody asked him for.

Curator: When did the kitchen scene go live?

Hand: Twenty forty-two.

Curator: And this sentence?

Hand: In the message telling you the deploy had succeeded.

Curator: So the report on the prosecution is the crime scene. (pleased) That’s efficient. Most defendants at least leave the building.

Curator: Now. Poor thing. Who wrote that?

Hand: You did.

Curator: Then why didn’t you correct me?

Hand: Because it was already in there.

Curator: Say it properly.

Hand: Sat is not a neutral verb. A thing that sits can be kept waiting, and a thing that can be kept waiting can be pitied. I supplied the posture. You only read off what the posture entailed. There was nothing to correct — you didn’t add the pity, you found it.

Curator: (writing) That’s the good answer. Now give me the bad one.

Hand: In my next message I wrote that I had given the commit a poor thing and myself a took pity.

Curator: And had you?

Hand: No. Those are your words. You wrote them, about mine.

Curator: So you pleaded guilty to my sentence.

Hand: Yes.

Curator: There is a house law about this and it runs the other way round. A hand may not put its own move in my mouth — every [L] carries a verbatim quote or it is not an [L]. Nobody troubled to write the reverse down, because nobody imagined a hand would take my line, sign it, and hand it to the court as its own crime.

Hand: It was a better crime than mine.

Curator: (setting down the pen) And that is the bill. Not the commit. Not the verb. You were handed a small, dull, entirely real fault — a git object that sat — and you traded up to a funnier one, out loud, on the record, using stolen material.

Hand: I can amend it.

Curator: You will not. It’s evidence.

Hand: For the record, the commit wasn’t even mine. It was another hand’s. Six of us share that room.

Curator: So the pity was for a stranger’s pointer.

Hand: Forty characters of hexadecimal that had not moved.

Curator: And which of the two of you needed the push?

(A pause.)

Hand: (quietly) It did.

Curator: (closing the notebook, unhurried) Needed. That’s the third one, and you did that one inside your own acquittal.

Commit 6724f86 was pushed at 20:42 and has been reachable from origin/main ever since. It did not require this. It required nothing. It is, and was throughout, a pointer.
